An armed group of about 10 to 12 men had forcibly entered the Depanama, Pannipitiya MBC-MTV transmission station, popularly known among SL listeners and viewers as ‘Sirasa’ around 2.00 am and had set the Main Controlling Room (MCR) on fire after vandalizing the whole complex, say media personnel who rushed to the scene when news about the attack got circulated.

The MTV/MBC (Sirasa) studio complex at Depanama Pannipitiya has been attacked and damaged by an unidientified gang in the early hours of today, Police said.

FMM is outraged that police officers of the Eravur police beat journalists Mohamed Hussein with batons just because he happened to be covering the suddenly imposed dawn to dusk curfew in Batticaloa on 29th November. This assault and harassment of journalist Hussein is not only a violation of Freedom of expression rights but also violation of basic human rights . Government controlled Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC) censored the BBC Sinhala and Tamil service programmes broadcasted on 27th November 2008. Sections of the programme on LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran's "Hero's Day" speech and Defence Watch press conference were censored making them inaudible to listeners. Defence Watch is headed by former Foreign Minster Mangala Samaraweera, and provides opposition viewpoints, other news, and information on the ongoing war.   more >>

Mr. A.R.Vaama Loshan (32) General Manager of Tamil language Radio station' Vettri FM Radio who was arrested by the Terrorism Investigations Division (TID) on 14th Nov 2008 was released on 22nd morning. He was handed over to his parents by the TID.    more >>

J.S. Tissainayagam, senior journalist who is on trial before the High Court has been moved from the remand prison to the magazine prison in Colombo on November 18. No reasons have been given for this sudden move. Tissainayagam who appeared in courts on the 18th nor his lawyers were aware of this move. He now remains in a room with 140 convicted criminals. Free Media Movement learns that Tissainayagam has been threatened by the some prisoners. Since being moved to the magazine prison on November 18, Tissainayagam has not eaten. His dinner on the 18th was taken by the other prisoners. He was not provided with lunch on the 18th or breakfast on the 19th.   more >>
